- Oversees performance upgrades and depot maintenance for the Dokdo-class ship, reaffirming its expertise in naval maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO)

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has been awarded a KRW 42.3 billion contract from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration to handle the depot maintenance of the ROK Navy’s Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship, as well as a KRW 25.4 billion contract for the overhaul of high-speed landing crafts.
The multinational shipbuilder announced that it participated in the bidding process earlier this month for the Navy’s outsourced depot maintenance projects, covering the large transport ship (LPH-I) and high-speed landing craft (LSF-II). After passing the eligibility evaluation and other procedures, HJSC was selected as the final contractor. The combined value of the two contracts amounts to KRW 67.7 billion.
Depot maintenance for the Navy involves disassembling, inspecting, and repairing key equipment and components of warships to ensure their weapon systems and performance are ready for operations. Unlike routine maintenance carried out at bases, depot maintenance takes place at shipyards or military maintenance depots, making it a more advanced and comprehensive maintenance process.
- High-speed hovercraft landing ship(LSF-II)
The South Korean shipbuilding company has strengthened its capabilities in the naval maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market by securing a contract last month for the development of performance upgrade systems for 18 guided missile fast attack crafts. In the field of high-speed landing crafts (LSF-II), for which it is now handling depot maintenance, the company stands out as the only domestic maritime defense contractor capable of independently designing and constructing these vessels, showcasing its exceptional technological expertise.
Notably, the global shipbuilder that independently designed and built ‘Dokdo’, the country’s first large transport ship, won the performance upgrade contract in 2022. It has now been awarded the depot maintenance project for the same vessel, which is expected to create new synergies in the domestic MRO market.
With this latest contract win, the company has further demonstrated its competitiveness in the domestic MRO market, and its expansion into international markets, including U.S. naval MRO, is expected to gain momentum.
Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJSC, stated, “Our technical expertise, built over more than 50 years of shipbuilding and depot maintenance as a maritime defense company, was key to securing this contract.” He added, “We will carry out this depot maintenance mission flawlessly to enhance the operational capabilities of the ROK Navy, and we will continue to boost our competitiveness to make strides in the international MRO market.” |
