- Follow-on order brings the total contract to four vessels after initial deal earlier this year
- A container ship of the same class built by HJSC
The 10,000-TEU container vessel is the largest model that HJSC can build at its Yeongdo Shipyard dock, and is based on the company’s own 7,700–9,000 TEU-class eco-friendly container ship designs. It features an optimized design that expands cargo capacity on deck and in the holds, while also taking into account production efficiency and safety by applying high-efficiency, advanced engineering technologies.
Earlier in February, the global shipbuilder drew industry attention after securing its first order for a container ship exceeding 10,000 TEU at its Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, the company’s main shipbuilding base with a history of over 90 years.
The newly ordered vessels are also eco-friendly container ships designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. To meet environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), they will be equipped with scrubber systems. In addition, an Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) system will be installed, allowing the vessels to shut down their engines while berthed and receive power from shore-based electricity sources, thereby reducing air pollution.
With this order, the South Korean shipbuilder has now secured a total of four 10,100-TEU container ships, enabling it to benefit from the “series production effect.” This refers to improved productivity and profitability as shipyards build the same type of vessel consecutively, increasing efficiency in design, procurement, and production processes. From the shipowner’s perspective, building sister ships also offers advantages in operations and maintenance, which is why such orders are often preferred.
Building on this 10,100-TEU eco-friendly container ship design, HJSC has also completed the development of an LNG dual-fuel (LNG DF) propulsion model of the same design, in preparation for a wider range of customer requirements. As environmental regulations tighten and demand for alternative fuels grows, the multinational shipbuilder plans to offer a wider range of options to shipowners and strengthen its market responsiveness.
CEO Yoo Sang-cheol stated, “Through eco-friendly container ships and a high-efficiency design and production system, we are now able to build four large container ships exceeding 10,000 TEU in sequence at Yeongdo Shipyard.” He added, “Going forward, we will continue to pursue a selective order strategy focused on profitability, while delivering high-quality vessels on schedule to build trust with our clients and further enhance our market competitiveness.” |
