- Secures Tagum City flood mitigation project, following Cebu New Port order
On February 26, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) announced that it has signed a KRW 92.2 billion contract with the Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the Tagum Flood Control Project.
The large-scale infrastructure project aims to prevent recurring flood damage in Tagum City on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines and will be financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). HJSC officially finalized the contract after receiving the notice of award (NOA) in November last year and completing detailed negotiations.
Under the agreement, the multinational constructor will carry out river dredging and channel expansion works over a 12.4-kilometer stretch in the Tagum river basin over a 48-month period. The project includes approximately 1.35 million cubic meters of dredging and 300,000㎥ of earthwork. It also involves the construction of three bridges, one automated floodgate, and one pedestrian overpass, helping to build resilient and comprehensive local infrastructure.
In particular, the contract is significant as it follows HJSC’s KRW 280 billion Cebu New Port Project secured in 2024. With both the ongoing port project in Consolacion, Cebu, and the newly awarded flood control works, the global construction company continues to strengthen its competitive position in the Philippine infrastructure market.
HJSC’s latest achievement builds on more than 50 years of experience in the Philippines, dating back to its market entry in 1973 as the first Korean construction company to operate in the country. Over the past five decades, the global constructor has successfully completed approximately 80 projects, including the Manila Light Rail Transit system, Davao International Airport, and Subic Shipyard, the highest number among foreign construction firms in the Philippines.
An HJSC official stated, “We will work closely with the DPWH to ensure the successful and timely completion of the Tagum Flood Control Project.” He added, “Building on five decades of experience and proven technical expertise in the Philippines, we will continue expanding our presence in overseas infrastructure market.” |
