On March 3, HHIC held a handover ceremony for GULMAR ATLANTIS, a Diving Support Vessel (DSV) ordered by the United Arab Emirates, at Yeongdo Dockyard in Busan.

GULMAR ATLANTIS is the first DSV among the two DSVs that HHIC won the bid to build in 2007 for the first time in Korea. DSV is a high-value, high-tech vessel which is as expensive as over KRW 100 billion.

This multipurpose deep-sea exploring vessel (6,200TEU) has a capacity of 120 crews. It helps divers (18 divers) work by turns in the deep sea (up to 300m deep). It features a variety of state-of-the-art facilities such as a decompression chamber for divers, floating crane (140t), helo deck and pleasant living facilities.

Some experts say that things would have been different if we had had this vessel at the ROKS Cheonan sinking. This vessel will be handed over to GULMAR and used in exploring oil well in the deep sea.

Even though the manufacturing process has been difficult due to an illegal general strike by the union for over 70 days, above all, all administrative staff and employees of suppliers made their efforts to rescue Yeongdo Dockyard. They even worked on a holiday day and night. They devoted all their energy to this project.

An official from HHIC said, “We constructed and handed over state-of-the-art bulk carriers (180,000 DWT) in January despite the illegal general strike. We have also been able to complete DSV thanks to strenuous efforts by all our employees and employees of suppliers.”

He added, “We have built a technology-intensive ship (the ARAON, the first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel) for the first time in Korea. We are going to keep concentrate on high-tech, high-value added ships.” He continued, “Based on our great knowhow and advanced technology in shipbuilding industry, we will get over current crisis and maintain Korea’s reputation as the world’s leading shipbuilder.”
