Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC)-Phil’s Subic Shipyard hits the jackpot bids in a row

- Signed a contract to build 8 vessels including HHIC’s first Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC) and Very Large Container Ship (VLCS)

HHIC won a bid to build VLCC for the first time. Because of a narrow dockyard in Yeongdo, the company hadn’t even been able to participate in a bid for the construction of VLCCs in the past. Since the Subic Shipyard equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities and world’s largest dock opened in 2009, HHIC finally won a bid to build VLCCs.

On April 9, HHHIC-Phil’s Subic Shipyard announced that it signed a contract to build 4 VLCCs (300,000DWT) with Navig8 and 2 VLCCs (300,000DWT) and 2 VLCSs (11,000TEU) with another European shipping company. The total contract amount reaches up to US 800 million dollars.

The VLCC is as large as 330m in length, 60m in width and 30m in depth. This latest double-hull vessel travels at 15 knots. It has a capacity of 300,000 deadweight tonne (DWT) which is huge enough to cover the total daily oil consumption of Korea. The vessels will be delivered from the second half of 2016 to the second half of 2017 in order.

In addition, HHIC signed a contract to build two VLCSs (11,000TEU) with another shipping company in Europe. They are all streamlined, eco-design high-performance vessels with great fuel efficiency.

According to the industry, HHIC-Phil’s Subic Shipyard has established the ground to penetrate into the very large shipbuilding market through recent successful bids including the one for the construction of mid and large-size container carriers last year.

In particular, the Subic Shipyard has signed a total of US 2.9 billion dollar contracts for the construction of 45 vessels since last year. In other words, it has booked enough advance orders for three years of production (until 2017) and strengthened its ground as a global shipyard.

HHIC targets to leap into the world’s leading shipbuilder by maximizing the efficiency of its production system through the establishment of a systematic two-track system (large vessel and offshore plant-centric Subic Shipyard and Yeongdo Dockyard focusing on mid-size and special-purpose vessels).

An official from HHIC said, “We are going to strengthen qualitative growth such as highly profitable vessels as well as quantitative growth.” He added, “For this, we will gradually increase our shipbuilding capability covering from very large vessels to high value-added vessels and offshore plant.”
