- Signed a contract to build two high-speed hovercraft landing ships at KRW 152.4 billion with the Defense Acquisition
Program Administration… proving its unrivaled technology

On December 28, HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction announced that it signed a contract to buil
two high-speed hovercraft landing ships (LSF-II) at KRW 152.4 billion with the Defense Acquisition
Program Administration.

As a result, the nation’s shipbuilding company has won the bids to build 12 vessels in total during the
second half of this year only, including 2 port service support ships (HUB), 3 next-generation, high-speed
vessels (PKX-B) and five 500-tonne patrol ships for Korea Coast Guard (KCG), Ministry of Public Safety
and Security.

HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction is South Korea’s only national defense facility provider with
the manufacturing technology of high-speed landing ships (LSF-II) which were built in the 1980s and
next-generation landing vessels (LSF-II). The company explained that it has proven its unrivalle
excellence in the manufacture of special-purpose vessels.

The landing ship fast (LSF) refers to an air-cushion vehicle (ACV) which travels over water by blowing
high-pressure air.

The next-generation high-speed landing ship HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction just signed is a
155-tonne vessel (27.9m in length, 14.6m in width). It is capable of traveling up to 40 knots (74km/h)
carrying 150 troops or 1 tank & 24 soldiers. Furthermore, this military vessel can travel as far as 185km
without additional fueling.

In particular, mounted on the Landing Platform Experimental (LPX) amphibious ship, this next-
generation, high-speed landing ship is able to approach the enemy’s coast fast from the outside of the
military radar and missile detection range. As an ACV, furthermore, it can operate at the coast and even in
the tidal flat and transport troops and materials deep into the inland without any delay.

The company has also been building the Dokdo-class ship II, the carrier of this landing craft, followin
the successful construction of the Dokdo-class ship I.

An official from HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction said, “A high-speed landing craft is an
auxiliary ship which can perform landing operation. We have accumulated extensive knowhow an
advanced technologies in the construction of landing crafts as well as the LPX.” He added, “We are going
to build and hand over perfect worships which would play a big role in the ROK Navy’s maritime defense
such as landing operation.”

The Korean shipbuilder plans to build the ships at its Yeongdo Shipyard and hand them over to the ROK
Navy in order by 2020.
