HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) makes a fresh new start under the new name ‘HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC)’. The global shipbuilder announced that it held an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting at its office building in Namyeong-dong, Seoul on December 22 and resolved the agenda for changes on the articles of incorporation (renamed into ‘HJSC’).

After the expiration of HHIC Holdings’ trademark for the old company name, HHIC has promoted the corporate name change with a goal of taking a leap into a global heavy industry corporation in the era of ESG after the acquisition of Dongbu Construction Consortium and establishing a global brand.

In October, the South Korean shipbuilding company invited public comments on its new corporate name against its management and employees, and HJSC was finally chosen. In the new company name, ‘HJ’ represents the legitimacy of HHIC, symbolizing a fresh start. It also stands for “The Highest Journey” to evolve into a global company promising the highest satisfaction by taking a step toward the next 100 years, exceeding 80 years.

With such change of the corporate name, the multinational shipbuilder also unveiled its corporate identity which symbolizes its management philosophy and vision. The new emblem was designed with the four black trigrams (collectively called ‘geongongamri’) of the Taegeukgi (national flag) as motives with the commitment to grow into the nation’s leading heavy industry company with endless challenging spirit and future vision.

With the change of the corporate name ‘HHIC’ which has been used for 32 years since the acquisition of the Korea Shipbuilding Corporation by Hanjin Group in 1989, HJSC now sets to open a new era.

Under the new management, HJSC has focused on early management normalization and discovery of new growth engine. The global shipbuilder has also promoted business diversification by winning commercial vessel orders along with public construction orders. In addition, the company reorganized is operating structure for prompt responses to rapidly changing business environments.

Such efforts have resulted in business success by winning the National Incheon Maritime Museum construction bid, capital region improvement project and container vessel orders including hybrid national fishery supervision vessels.

CEO Hong Moon-ki said, “The launching of the new corporate name will be a great opportunity for us to strengthen our position as a general heavy industry corporation and evolve into a sustainable ESG corporation.” He added, “We promise that we would keep moving forward to make a contribution to national economy and live up to the expectations of the local society and shareholders with determination and perseverance.”
