‘Mt. Bongnaesan Guardian’ HJSC leads PLOGGING Campaign
- Picks up trash around Jungri Coast, Yeongdo devastated by Typhoon Hinnamnor as a part of community service activities On September 29, HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) had BONGNAESAN PLOGGING Campaign in Yeongdo-gu, Busan to protect environments and pick up trash around Jungri Coast. As the nation’s first steel shipyard founded in Yeongdo, Busan in 1937, the multinational shipbuilder celebrates its 85th anniversary this year. The global shipbuilding company said that it promoted this event to make people aware of the importance of clean nature and protect the nature and ecological system of Yeongdo, a treasure island in Busan. ‘Plogging’ is coined from the English word ‘walking’ and a Swedish term ‘plocka upp (literally means ‘picking up’)’. Since participants can improve their health and protect nature while walking and picking up trash, this environmental protection activity has been gaining popularity around the world. Participants walked and picked up trash along the forest trail and coastal path from Mt. Bongnaesan, a tourist attraction of Busan with scenic natural landscape in which the head office of HJSC is situated, to Jungri Coast. In particular, Jungri Coast was inundated with marine debris caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor which hit Busan early September. About 200 executives and employees collected all kinds of trash such as plastics, ALDFG (abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and Styrofoam and cleaned the coastal region. They also picked up litter and cleaned along the Bongnaesan trail and footpath. An official from HJSC said, “Our management and employees improved their health and had a meaningful time by collecting trash around Jungri Coast and picking up litter along the Bongnaesan trail.” He continued, “We are going to actively participate in diverse community service campaigns.” Meanwhile, HJSC had ‘2022 New-Contract & Safety-Encouraging Ceremony’ along with the Plogging campaign, pledging the achievement of the management goal and zero accident.
