HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) is rigorously managing safety and health at construction sites amidst the ongoing extreme heat.

On August 6, the multinational construction company announced that, as of July, CEO Kim Wan-seok and all headquarters executives conducted a comprehensive inspection of construction sites in preparation for the heat wave. The executives visited their assigned sites to verify that preventive measures were being properly implemented, following the special response guidelines for heat waves and heavy rains issued by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

This summer, the global shipbuilder is running its own ‘Rest Alert Traffic Light’ campaign to ensure the strict adherence to the ‘Three Basic Rules for Preventing Heat-related Illnesses: Water, Shade, and Rest’. The system monitors real-time temperatures and displays the current level using a color-coded system, making it easier for on-site workers to understand and follow the guidelines. It mandates breaks of 10 to 15 minutes every hour depending on the risk levels—Attention (Yellow), Warning (Orange), and Danger (Red)—and adjusts or suspends outdoor work based on health conditions, with a strong focus on effective workforce management.

To further support worker comfort, rest areas equipped with ice machines and cooling fans have been set up in easily accessible locations.

The national shipbuilding and construction company also runs seasonal ‘NOK’ campaigns to promote a strong culture of safety and health. The ‘NOK’ campaign, which stands for ‘No to Hazards, OK to Prevention Activities’, highlights key focus areas each month. For August, the campaign's focus is ‘No to Heat-Related Illnesses! OK to Water, Shade, and Rest’, with an emphasis on preventing heat-related illnesses.

CEO Kim Wan-seok stated, “The safety of our workers is our top priority.” He continued, “Thanks to our rigorous safety and health management, we achieved zero major accidents for four consecutive years up until last year. This year, with the continued dedication and effort of all our employees, we are committed to maintaining zero major accidents for a fifth consecutive year”.
