HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has signed a construction contract with an Oceania-based shipowner for four 8,850 TEU eco-friendly container ships, valued at approximately KRW 640 billion.

The vessels are designed with high-efficiency hull forms and superior fuel economy to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Like HJSC’s recent eco-friendly builds, these container ships maximize fuel efficiency and container capacity. They are equipped with SOx scrubbers to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulfur oxide emission regulations and are “methanol-ready,” capable of using methanol as fuel, allowing for carbon-neutral operations.

As global decarbonization trends accelerate, next-generation environmentally friendly fuel ships powered by LNG, methanol, or ammonia are increasingly adopted. The South Korean shipbuilder has focused on eco-friendly shipbuilding, delivering methanol-powered 9,000 TEU container ships for domestic shipowner HMM, LNG dual-fuel vessels, methanol-ready ships, and, most recently, LNG bunkering vessels.

Over the past three years, the multinational shipbuilding company has strengthened its reputation in the medium-sized eco-friendly container ship sector by designing and constructing 5,500–9,000 TEU vessels at its Yeongdo Shipyard.

This contract reinforces mutual trust with the shipowner while further establishing HJSC as a specialized builder of eco-friendly ships.

HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol said, “This order reflects the shipowner’s continued satisfaction with our delivery, specifications, and quality, and once again demonstrates that HJSC’s eco-friendly container ship technology is recognized in the global market.” He added, “We will continue to honor the trust of our clients by delivering high-quality, environmentally advanced ships on schedule.”

The four vessels will be constructed at HJSC’s Yeongdo Shipyard and delivered sequentially starting in 2027.
