HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) announced on June 18 that its Construction Division has been selected as the preferred bidder for the design-build contract for Section 3 of the Chungbuk Line High-Speed Rail Roadbed Construction Project, commissioned by the Korea National Railway.

The Chungbuk Line high-speed upgrade project involves straightening and accelerating an 85.5 km section between Cheongju International Airport and Bongyang-eup in Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time from the capital region, including Seoul, to the northern part of Chungcheongbuk-do

With a total investment of KRW 1.9 trillion and a target completion year of 2031, the project has been divided into five construction sections. HJSC has been awarded Section 3, covering a 15.05 km stretch from Bongbang-dong to Sancheok-myeon in Chungju. The work includes extensive earthworks, seven bridges, and three tunnels, with the contract value amounting to KRW 429.8 billion. HJSC holds a 41% stake in the joint venture.

This contract further reinforces HJSC’s reputation for excellence in railway infrastructure, built on decades of hands-on experience and technological innovation. The company has played a key role in major national rail projects, including the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway, the Wonju–Gangneung Line, the Seongnam–Yeoju double-track railway, and the Ulsan–Pohang section.

More recently, the multinational enterprise has secured and is executing large-scale projects such as the GTX-A Samsung–Dongtan, GTX-B Yongsan–Sangbong, Chuncheon–Sokcho, Gwanggyo–Homaesil, and Indeokwon–Dongtan lines.

Beyond rail, HJSC also has strong capabilities in national infrastructure sectors such as airports, ports, and roads. In 2023, the company ranked third in Korea’s public construction sector, demonstrated by its winning bid for the Saemangeum International Airport project.

An HJSC official commented, “This contract for the Chungbuk Line high-speed rail project is a testament to our proven expertise in railway construction and advanced engineering capabilities.” He continued, “We will continue to contribute to the development of core national transportation networks and the balanced growth of local regions.”
