HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) is generating explosive interest from international delegations and visitors during its debut at the 2025 International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX). With consultations reportedly advancing to discussions of specific contract terms, expectations are rising that this momentum could translate into a wave of new orders.
Held from May 28 to 31 at BEXCO in Busan, MADEX is Korea’s largest and most international maritime defense exhibition, hosted biennially by the ROK Navy. It showcases the latest in naval defense technology and weapon systems and serves as a major platform for global industry players.

Amid the participation of leading domestic and international defense contractors, HJSC’s booth has seen a steady influx of foreign buyers and official delegations. Some discussions have even reached the level of Letters of Intent (LOIs), demonstrating serious buyer interest.
The multinational shipbuilder is showcasing its flagship platforms in amphibious, patrol, and transport vessels, including the large-deck amphibious assault ships Dokdo and Marado, high-speed landing craft (LSF-II), guided-missile patrol killers (PKG), and 3,000-ton class Korea Coast Guard vessels.
Of particular focus is the company’s LSF, an air-cushion high-speed landing craft. The LSF operates by inflating air into a skirt to hover above the surface, making it functionally closer to an aircraft than a ship. Built with aluminum for reduced weight and featuring advanced aerodynamics and propulsion systems, the LSF requires exceptional technical expertise across design, construction, and MRO operations.
HJSC holds the distinction of being Korea’s only shipbuilder capable of building LSFs. The company’s technological excellence is evidenced by the continued peak performance of vessels delivered nearly two decades ago. - Delegation from Ecuador
At MADEX, HJSC’s LSF drew intense attention from buyers and delegations from across the globe, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, the UK, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, and Vietnam. On May 30, delegations from Australia and the UAE visited the company’s Yeongdo Shipyard to tour the production site and inspect an LSF currently under construction.
HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol stated, “The LSF, capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots (approx. 74 km/h), can operate not only at sea but across 80% of the world’s coastal terrain, including shallow waters and mudflats, excluding only cliffs. Its all-weather, high-speed capabilities make it one of the most advanced platforms on the water, and this is resonating with buyers.” He added, “As Korea’s premier naval defense contractor, we will continue to lead the way in expanding K-Defense into the global market through aggressive and strategic business efforts.” |
