- Leads the way in naval equipment localization as Korea’s sole builder of high-speed landing craft

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC), a leading force in Korea’s defense industry, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to jointly develop and localize key systems for the next-generation high-speed landing craft (LSF-II).

The agreement, signed on May 7, outlines a collaborative effort between HJSC and KAI to localize the simulator and Integrated Controls, Alarm, and Monitoring System (iCAMS) for the LSF-II Batch-II program. By combining their respective technological expertise, the two companies aim to bolster Korea’s defense capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign equipment.

The LSF (Landing Ship Fast) is a high-speed air-cushion vehicle (ACV) designed for amphibious operations across sea and land. Powered by high-pressure air, it can reach speeds of up to 40 knots (approximately 74 km/h) while transporting armed personnel, tanks, and armored vehicles. Its ability to access diverse terrains including mudflats, rivers, and sandy coastlines makes it especially valuable in modern over-the-horizon amphibious operations, where traditional landing craft are limited.

According to the U.S. Navy, such air-cushion landing craft are capable of accessing nearly 80% of the world’s coastlines, demonstrating their strategic importance.

HJSC is the only company in the Republic of Korea with the proven capability to build both the LSF-I and the next-generation LSF-II. It has successfully constructed all eight high-speed landing craft currently commissioned by the ROK Navy, earning recognition for its specialized shipbuilding expertise.

Under the MOU, HJSC and KAI will not only pursue the localization of simulator and iCAMS components but will also engage in joint marketing, R&D collaboration, and expand their partnership to cover future naval programs.

HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol stated, “Partnering with KAI, Korea’s leading aerospace systems integrator, to localize critical systems for high-speed landing craft, which are key assets in modern amphibious warfare, is a significant step forward.” He added, “As the nation’s sole builder of these craft, HJSC is committed to advancing localization efforts and contributing to the enhancement of Korea’s naval power.”
