HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC), a key player in K-defense industry, has teamed up with national airline Korean Air to localize core components for unmanned target drones used on multi-purpose training boats (MTBs).
On April 7, the multinational shipbuilder signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korean Air to collaborate on unmanned aerial vehicle and vessel technologies for MTBs. The two companies agreed to combine their respective technological strengths to jointly drive the localization of drone components—an effort aimed at bolstering national defense capabilities. - HJSC’s Multi-purpose Training Boat (MTB)
The MTB is a specialized naval vessel that supports combat training exercises, including anti-ship and anti-air missile operations, torpedo launches, and electronic warfare training. As a dedicated training platform, it reduces the burden on operational warships and allows for complex, real-world combat simulations.
Measuring 45 meters in length and 15 meters in width, the 230-ton catamaran-type vessel can reach speeds of up to 25 knots (46.3 km/h). It can be equipped with unmanned target ships and drones, underwater communications systems, torpedo recovery boats, and an electronic warfare trainer (EWT).
Since 2013, the global shipbuilding company has played a leading role in the development of MTBs—carrying out the initial exploratory development project for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), designing and delivering the lead ship, and subsequently building all three follow-on vessels. As the sole contractor to deliver all four of the nation’s MTBs to date, HJSC has cemented its reputation for technological excellence.
The latest MOU aims to replace imported parts in the unmanned target drones onboard MTBs with high-performance domestic alternatives based on the latest technologies. The two companies will jointly identify and prepare new localization projects, coordinate marketing efforts, and explore expanded cooperation in other naval programs.
HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol commented, “As the builder of the ROK Navy’s first dedicated training support vessel, we’re proud to contribute to component localization efforts.” He continued, “As a leading maritime defense contractor, we’ll continue to support system upgrades and performance improvements to strengthen naval capabilities.” |
